5/17/2023 0 Comments Nidhogg norseAs the album draws to a close the darkness found earlier in the release increases, but also combines itself with beauty. They form a solid foundation on which the guitars dart and swim across. Drums are constant throughout the songs, the only thing that changes is speed and that is not by much. There is a great 'thickness' to the music, one may think of either a hot day spent in the forest, or alternatively, a day after walking through thick snow, combatting both the heat of your body, and the cold of the external weather. Two guitar tracks are used, one runs over the top whilst other layers melt into the background, giving way to the top guitar track through counterpoint techniques and 'fading' into noise, often much harsher than in the first half of the album. The sound of the guitars is probably the most notable. The second half of the album differs from the first half. Vocals accentuate the darkness of the music, tearing over the top of the blurred drumming and ambience. in Norse myths Nidhogg was a dragon living at the root of the Yggdrasil - the World Tree connecting the Nine Worlds. After a few listens the noise becomes decipherable and the beauty within can be found. Listeners who enjoy extreme noise like Merzbow would probably have more fun getting through the first few listens of this album if they are previously unaccustomed to hearing Ildjarn. While Nidhogg chews on the root, he’s often ridiculed by insults from Ratatoskr. The first lot of tracks are often assaulting on the new listener and it often takes some listening before the music can be dissected and fully appreciated. The death of the god prompted the Norse apocalyptic event called Ragnarok, the Doom of the Gods. (Norse mythology) a dragon who lives in Niflheim (world of ice and the dead), feeding upon the roots of Yggdrasil and bodies of the damned. The first half of the album is composed with excellent tracks formed from constant percussions and small riffs which repeat themselves over to create an ambience, over time _tiny_ changes can be made out within the structure of the sound, taking the music into new directions. Songs like Eksistensens Jeger form bridges between the older styles of Ildjarn-Nidhogg and the later, which went into ambient landscape music inspired by the Nature found in Norway's forests and mountains and played on keyboards. The album is cleverly divided between the two albums and unreleased material. This album is an exception to the rule, having a few unreleased tracks, the Svartfrad MCD and the classic Norse (re-mastered). This mostly results in individual songs being good and still as admirable, however, the disc as a whole fails to become an album, rather, it becomes a disc of individual songs.
